Historical Background:

Megaliths refer to large granite stones that are cut and transformed into monuments that vary in shapes and sizes according to cultures. Megaliths can be found in many countries with varying styles and serves different cultural purposes. Some locals describe megaliths as ‘living stones’ as they are believed to gradually grow in size and glows when lit up at night.

In England, the ‘Stonehenge’ megalith was found at a large open area that was used to study the movement of the sun and the stars. Meanwhile, megaliths in Indonesia can be found at ancient cemeteries which consisted of standing stones, carved into shapes of animals and other motifs. The megaliths were dated back as early as the prehistoric era to the early 1900s.

There are more than 100 megaliths that can be found in Alor Gajah; mainly in Naning, Cherana Putih, Simpang Ampat, Tanjung Rimau, Gadek, Kemuning, Pulau Sebang, and up to the Negeri Sembilan border. Megaliths in Melaka and Negeri Sembilan are believed to have existed as early as the 6^th century, almost at the same time as the Hindu-Buddha civilisation in Lembah Bujang, Kedah. These stones were usually planted in pairs at burial grounds, with heights ranging from 6 inches to 15 feet.
