Turtle Conservation and Information Centre, Padang Kemunting

Majlis Perbandaran Alor Gajah

The Turtle Information Centre in Padang Kemunting is a conservation centre for the Hawksbill Turtle (Eretmochelys Imbricata) which is one of the most beautiful turtles in the world. This turtle is called ‘hawksbill’ due to its unique eagle like mouth.

The centre’s hatchery can house between 300 – 600 turtle egg nests during each spawning season. Each nest is 45cm deep and turtle eggs would normally take around 60 days to hatch. Upon hatching, baby sea turtles will be released into the sea. When they mature, turtles will normally return to the beach of their birth.

Hawksbill Turtles are protected under the Fisheries Act 1985. Under this act, only licensed egg retrievers are allowed to move and retrieve turtle eggs. Hawksbill Turtles are an endangered species. The beaches at Padang Kemunting have recorded the highest landings by Hawksbill Turtles in the state of Melaka.
